Cameron Smith records 5th PGA Tour victory; wins the Players Championship by 1-shot
Australian pro Cameron Smith outlasted his mates and won the biggest tournament of his career against the strongest field of the year. He made 10 birdies and had 13 one-putts before putting his signature to a 6-under-par 66 to finish at 13 under and win by one over India’s Anirban Lahiri. Smith's final 1-putt came from 3 feet on the 18th to rescue bogey after he inexplicably punched his second shot from under trees into the water when he held a 3-shot lead. He also won $3.6 million of the $20 million purse, the largest in Tour history and he did it in front of his family (mother Sharon and sister Melanie) who traveled from Australia weeks ago.
