The longer the distance, the better
Hitting the ball straight doesn't mean you hit it at a longer distance or in a powerful fashion. And when you talk about power, lag is the first thing that comes to mind. Maintaining the proper angle between the shaft and your forearm during downswing will keep the power and also resulting to a farther distance.
